It’s been a ridiculously long time since I last updated my website. In fact, it’s been – ahem – seven years since I last blogged on here. My reason, I suppose, was that I thought people didn’t really look at author websites any more. If they wanted to keep up with an author’s work, and/or get in touch with them, they would do so via the socials.
In recent weeks, however, I’ve had a few potentially interesting work-related queries relayed to me by my ex-agent, which had obviously come via the outdated contact details on my website. I decided, therefore, that maybe it was time I came in here and gave the website a major update. So that’s what I’ve been doing these past few days – updating my biography, my work pages, my contact details, and now this blog.
Obviously, I don’t want to splurge you with everything I’ve been doing for the past seven years, so my aim is to do a series of blogs over the next few weeks, each of which will focus on a different subject. In this first post-2020 blog I’ll be talking about my current favourite podcast: Scarred For Life.
Scarred For Life started out not as a podcast, but as a trilogy of hefty books, each of which focused on a different decade (volume one the 1970s, volume two the 1980s, volume three the 1990s), and acted as a deep, nostalgic dive into the pop culture – movies, TV shows, books, comics etc – that shaped us, and more importantly terrified us, as impressionable kids.
The books were successful enough to spawn what has become an even more successful podcast, the premise of which is that each week a special guest will come on to talk about their life, their influences, their work etc, and will bring along with them three things that made such a huge impression on them that they effectively scarred them for life.
Past guests have included Mark Gatiss, Michael Sheen, Michelle Gomez, Reece Shearsmith, Lucy Porter, Sam Ryder, Peter Serafanowicz, Jon Culshaw, Andy Nyman, Sophie Aldred, Alice Lowe, John Thomson, Maxine Peake, Matthew Holness, Samira Ahmed… and me.
